Cabaret Voltaire are an English electronic music group formed in Sheffield in 1973, originally comprising Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk and Chris Watson. Their early work involved tape-loops, DIY electronics and performance art rooted in Dada-inspired experimentation—helping to pioneer industrial music in the UK.
Over the years they evolved from raw experimental sounds into incorporating post-punk, funk, house and techno. Key albums include The Voice of America (1980) and Red Mecca (1981). Their influence on subsequent electronic and dance music is immense: acts such as New Order, Nine Inch Nails and others have cited them as key inspiration. After Richard Kirk’s death in 2021, the band were revived by Mallinder and Watson to mark their 50-year legacy, with a series of special UK shows starting in late 2025
