Book of Churches is the solo project of Felix Mackenzie-Barrow, co-vocalist and guitarist with alt-country band Divorce. Created alongside his work with the band, the project offers a more stripped-back and introspective outlet, built around an instinctive, DIY approach to songwriting and recording. Working largely in isolation, Mackenzie-Barrow wrote each song in a single day, recorded it the next and resisted overworking the material, allowing immediacy and honesty to lead the process. The result is a body of work shaped by trust in instinct and a commitment to capturing unfiltered thought and feeling.
The debut album Book of Churches explores themes of lost love, dread, grief and anger, presented with a quiet minimalism that draws comparison to folk singer-songwriters such as Nick Drake, Fionn Regan and Leonard Cohen. Mixed by Richie Kennedy, the record reflects a conscious breaking of creative rules in favour of vulnerability and restraint, giving space to lyric, melody and atmosphere. Existing alongside a period of intense touring and acclaim with Divorce, Book of Churches stands as a deeply personal counterpoint — intimate, reflective and rooted in the raw contents of its creator’s inner world.
