Aqualung is an English electronic and alternative music project led by singer, songwriter, and producer Matt Hales.
Formed in the late 1990s, Aqualung blends atmospheric electronics with piano-driven melodies, intimate vocals, and emotionally reflective lyrics.
The project gained widespread attention with its self-titled debut album Aqualung (2002), featuring the international hit “Strange and Beautiful (I’ll Put a Spell on You)”, which became especially popular through film, television, and advertising. Follow-up releases such as Still Life (2003) further expanded Aqualung’s audience, including the well-known single “Brighter Than Sunshine.”
Over the years, Aqualung has evolved in sound while maintaining a focus on mood, melody, and personal storytelling. Albums like Memory Man (2007), Magnetic North (2010), and 10 Futures (2015) showcase Hales’ growth as a producer and songwriter, incorporating modern electronic textures alongside organic instrumentation.
