Whitelands are a London-based shoegaze and dream-pop quartet whose shimmering soundscapes, hazy guitars and introspective lyrics have positioned them at the forefront of the UK’s new wave of alternative acts. Formed in 2017 by vocalist and guitarist Etienne Quartey-Papafio, the project evolved into a full band with Michael Adelaja (guitar), Vanessa Govinden (bass) and Jagun Meseorisa (drums). Drawing on the ethereal textures of classic shoegaze while infusing their music with themes of identity, race and belonging, Whitelands create songs that are both deeply personal and sonically expansive.
Their debut album Night-Bound Eyes Are Blind to the Day (2024), released on Sonic Cathedral, earned widespread praise for its dreamy atmosphere and emotional honesty, with critics celebrating its blend of melancholy and light. Following acclaimed performances supporting Slowdive and at festivals across the UK, the band continue to expand their vision, crafting immersive music that speaks to vulnerability and resilience in modern life. With their next album Sunlight Echoes set for release in 2026, Whitelands stand poised as one of the most affecting and forward-thinking bands in contemporary shoegaze.
