History & Culture of The Gate, Cardiff
The Gate takes its name from its home in a striking Grade II listed former church on Keppoch Street, in the heart of Cardiff's Roath community. The school hall was built in 1886, and the church was added in 1901; architect W. Beddoe Rees, in collaboration with J. H. James, designed it in a distinctive Gothic style, complete with a polygonal bell tower on the street corner.
The building served as Plasnewydd Presbyterian Church for much of the twentieth century, before being purchased in 2000 and given a four-year redevelopment, supported by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, a private donor and the Welsh Assembly Government. The result preserved the building's original character — its galleries, columns and Gothic detailing all remain — while transforming the space into a flexible venue for live performance.
The Gate reopened in September 2004, and has spent the two decades since building a reputation as one of Cardiff's most distinctive spaces for live music, theatre, comedy and community events. Its unusual setting, part cultural venue, part converted church, gives every show a character that's hard to find anywhere else in the city.
Today, The Gate continues to champion a broad, community-driven programme, hosting everything from touring musicians and comedians to spoken word and local exhibitions, while staying true to the building's roots as a gathering place for the people of Roath.
