Thundercat is the alter ego of Stephen “Stephen Lee” Bruner (born October 19, 1984), a Los Angeles-born bassist, singer, composer and producer whose work bridges jazz fusion, funk, soul, psychedelia and progressive R&B. Raised in a musical family—with his father a drummer and his mother a flautist—he gravitated toward the bass early, absorbing influences from legends such as Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller. Over time he moved from supporting roles to leading his own inventive musical vision.
His solo albums include The Golden Age of Apocalypse (2011), Apocalypse (2013), Drunk (2017) and It Is What It Is (2020), each pushing boundaries of genre and showcasing his capacity for deep emotional nuance. It Is What It Is won a Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album, marking his arrival as a front-line artist. He has also made significant contributions behind the scenes—most notably on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly—where his playing and musical touch helped shape some of its most celebrated moments. On stage and in studio, Thundercat invites listeners into dreamy sound worlds that mix virtuosity with vulnerability.
