Tampa-born and New Orleans-based, Thomas Dollbaum is a songwriter’s songwriter — a storyteller who builds his songs the way other people build short stories, full of back roads, pine flatwoods and characters trying to outrun their own history. His debut album Wellswood (2022) arrived on Big Legal Mess and drew warm reviews for its unhurried, plainspoken writing, with critics reaching for comparisons to Townes Van Zandt and Jason Molina. The Drive All Night EP followed in 2025, his first release for Dear Life Records.
His second album, Birds of Paradise (2026), is his most direct record yet. Written in three months and tracked live across four days at Dial Back Sound in Water Valley, Mississippi, it was made with producer Clay Jones and a band of trusted players including Nick Corson, Josh Halper and MJ Lenderman, who also lends harmonies. The result is loose, warm and lived-in — songs about loss, home and the places you leave behind, delivered with the kind of quiet authority that rewards close listening.
