Bath is known for a lot of things " thermal spas, roman ruins and Georgian architecture to name a few " but driving indie rock with a blues infusion is perhaps not usually present on the list. That’s all changing though, with the continued success of local boys and alternative rock band The Family Rain.
Formed by three brothers " William, Ollie and Timothy Walter " in 2011, the band released their debut single Trust Me… I’m a Genius the following year. The trio of brothers had previously been in a Darkness-esque band called the Rock Pirates, but later left to pursue the more serious brand of music to found in the Family Rain’s concerts and recordings.
Today they’re one of the most intriguing and exciting bands on the UK music scene and are on many critics’ ‘ones to watch list’. The NME described their first album, 2014’s Under the Volcano, as “Bolshy and raw sounding, it’s a warm record that entices because it pushes the Walter brother’s personalities to the fore… had it been honed over two years in Abbey Road at a cost of billions, it wouldn’t connect. But it’s the simplicity, and the relative cheapness of their sound and set-up, that resonates like early Supergrass or Charlatans records did.” High praise indeed.
This reference to two of the nineties biggest Britrock bands points to the band’s retro style, which takes in not just this golden age of UK indie rock, but also the blues and rock of old that they themselves covered in their earlier time in Rock Pirates. The band have a retro rock sound that is nonetheless refreshing, and there are many fans out there who are eagerly anticipating a follow-up album. In the meantime though fans content themselves with seeing the band live at June 11th’s upcoming The Family Rain tour date in London.
Taking place at Bush Hall in London, the show is a perfect opportunity to catch them before they get too big. Bush Hall is located in Shepherd Bush in West London and is itself shot through with rock pedigree. The 100-year-old venue was at one point a rehearsal space for The Who and Cliff Richard, and has in the past couple of decades seen performances by Amy Winehouse, Kings of Leon, Paul Weller and Florence and the Machine. Become part of the venue’s illustrious history and see one of 2015’s hottest bands by snapping up The Family Rain tickets from Gigantic today.
