The Brand New Heavies are a British jazz-funk ensemble from Ealing, London, whose grooving blend of live instrumentation, soulful vocals and club-inflected flair has positioned them among the pioneers of the acid jazz movement. Formed in 1985 by school friends Simon Bartholomew (guitar), Andrew Levy (bass/keys) and Jan Kincaid (drums/keys), the band began as an instrumental rare-groove outfit and quickly evolved into a full-fledged funk/soul collective.
Their breakout period in the early 1990s, especially with the addition of vocalist N’Dea Davenport in 1990, brought a string of hit singles — including “Dream Come True”, “Stay This Way” and “Never Stop” — and the landmark album Brother Sister (1994), which peaked at No.4 on the UK Albums Chart and achieved platinum status. Over the decades the band have released further albums, adapted to changing line-ups and maintained their high-energy live performances, remaining devoted to crafting timeless grooves rooted in funk, soul and jazz. With over 2.5 million records sold worldwide, The Brand New Heavies stand as one of the defining voices of modern groove-culture.
