The Bats are a New Zealand indie rock band formed in Christchurch in 1982, and are one of the defining acts of the country’s influential Dunedin Sound. Led by singer-songwriter Robert Scott alongside longtime members Paul Kean, Malcolm Grant and Kaye Woodward, the band are known for their jangling guitars, melodic songwriting and understated charm.
Over the decades, The Bats have built a devoted following through a catalogue of warmly crafted albums including The Bats (1970), Fear of God (1991), Silverbeet (1993), Bats in Berlin (2013) and The Bats: Volume 1 (2014). Celebrated for their consistency and enduring creativity, the band’s music blends indie pop sensibility with thoughtful lyrics and timeless melodies, making them one of the most beloved and enduring groups in New Zealand’s alternative music scene.
