Swallow the Sun, formed in 2000 in Jyväskylä, Finland, is a leading force in the death-doom scene. Known for their blend of melancholic melodies and crushing heaviness, the band, led by guitarist Juha Raivio, initially gained recognition with their 2003 debut album The Morning Never Came. Over the years, their sound has evolved, incorporating gothic, post-rock, and black metal influences, while retaining their signature atmospheric intensity.
Their 2019 release, When a Shadow Is Forced into the Light, marked a shift towards cleaner vocals and more expansive, melancholic compositions. Swallow the Sun has continued to captivate audiences with their dark, emotive storytelling and expansive soundscapes, with their most recent album, Shining (2024), further cementing their legacy in the metal world.
