About Refused

Refused is a Swedish hardcore punk band, originally formed in Umeå in 1991. Known for their innovative and genre-defying approach, the band played a pivotal role in shaping the sound and philosophy of hardcore punk, with a notable focus on combining aggression, political consciousness, and experimental elements.

Refused's breakthrough came with their 1998 album The Shape of Punk to Come, which is widely regarded as one of the most influential punk albums of all time. The record redefined the boundaries of hardcore by incorporating elements of jazz, electronic music, and progressive rock, and it featured politically charged lyrics that critiqued societal norms, the establishment, and the music industry itself. Tracks like "New Noise" and "Tannhäuser/Derivè" became iconic, embodying the band's call for rebellion against the stagnation they saw within the punk movement.

After The Shape of Punk to Come, Refused disbanded in 1998, citing internal conflicts and the feeling that they had pushed their creative boundaries as far as they could. Despite their relatively short career, their influence endured, and the band’s legacy continued to inspire a new generation of musicians and fans who sought to break the mold of traditional hardcore punk.

In 2012, much to the delight of their fanbase, Refused reunited and began performing again, eventually releasing the album Freedom in 2015. The album continued their tradition of pushing boundaries, blending aggressive punk with elements of rock and electronic music. Refused’s music remains a significant touchstone for anyone exploring the intersection of punk rock, experimentation, and political activism.
