Os Mutantes are a legendary Brazilian psychedelic rock band, widely regarded as pioneers of the Tropicália movement. Formed in São Paulo in 1966 by brothers Sérgio Dias and Arnaldo Baptista, along with singer Rita Lee, the group blended rock, psychedelia, and Brazilian rhythms with experimental arrangements and irreverent lyrics.
Their early albums, including Os Mutantes (1968), Mutantes (1969), and A Divina Comédia ou Ando Meio Desligado (1970), became cult classics, influencing generations of artists from Beck to Nirvana. Known for their playful, genre-defying sound, the band pushed musical boundaries with unconventional instrumentation and studio techniques.
Despite lineup changes and a hiatus in the late 1970s, Os Mutantes reformed in the 2000s, with Sérgio Dias leading the band into a new era. Their later works, including Haih or Amortecedor (2009) and Zzyzx (2020), continue to capture their adventurous spirit. Today, Os Mutantes remain an enduring symbol of Brazilian counterculture and psychedelic innovation.
