An evening with Natalie Merchant, The Church of St John The Evangelist, Oxford - 30th July 2018

An absolutely magical evening with Natalie Merchant, a stripped back performance with just guitarist Erik Della Penna.
Played many of the old favourites in a warm, intimate atmosphere with the wonderful acoustics of the church.
Her observation about the American political situation ..... the White House being inhabited by a drunk driver and how she was now was feeling nostalgic for the Bush administration brought the house down.

An evening with Natalie Merchant, St Georges Church, BN2 1ED, Brighton - 27th July 2018

I love St George’s as a venue. I sing their regularly myself as part of a choir and always enjoy being on the other side of the stage. Natalie Merchant has the most haunting unique voice and her interaction with the crowd was wonderful.
The only downside for me was the awful man sitting behind me who fought his way to the front when the doors opened and shoved people out of the way to get a front row seat. He had more than one person in tears, was swearing loudly and despite several of us asking him to show a bit of respect especially as he was in a church it took the poor stewards to come and ask him to be quiet or he would have to leave. He said he was a friend of Natalie’s but I can’t imagine she would have tolerated such behaviour from someone so unpleasant and had she known this had been going on before she came on stage it may have been prettty unsettling. I feel it would have been appropriate for him to have been escorted from the church and he was still grumbling away behind me after he had been spoken to (he ended up in the second row!)
Apart from that and a slight whine from the speaker at stage right, it was a wonderful evening. I feel sad that I had to write anything negative really!!

An evening with Natalie Merchant, Bath Komedia, Bath - 16th July 2018

To listen to Natalie Merchant is to listen to a voice that knows no boundaries; minor/major, layers of beautiful singing. She is imperious and her zany eccentricity simply adds to the occasion. I also loved the way she confiscated a phone off a member of the audience who chose to film one of her songs rather than just enjoy the moment in their mind. Good for Natalie.

The venue, however, was not great. Too hot, a lack of air flow and simply too claustrophobic. I am sorry but I won't be returning to the Komedia. The policy of finding a seat rather than have them allocated is a nonsense. It's something I have tried to understand, but don't get it.

I'd forgotten how many beautiful songs Natalie has written over the years....what an exquisite performance...natural, warm, funny and felt like being part of a huge family of kind, loving and empathetic people who share and appreciate the joy of her music and her values. Unforgettable xx

Singer / songwriter Natalie Merchant is widely regarded as highly influential. From her days in folk rock band 10,000 Maniacs to her highly successful solo career, her sound can be heard as it has filtered though alternative music as she continues to reach and electrify new audiences.

Following the release of her latest album Butterfly last year, she now heads out on the road for An Evening With Natalie Merchant. The very special performances take place at Komedia Bath, Pittville Pump Room at Cheltenham, Ilkley Kings Hall, Buxton Opera House, St Georges at Brighton and The Church of St John The Evangelist in Oxford during July 2018.

After rising to fame at the helm of the popular folk-rock band 10,000 Maniacs, Natalie Merchant enjoyed even greater success as a solo artist during the mid-'90s. Her literate, socially conscious songs established her among the preeminent women in pop music, while her solo debut -- 1995's Tigerlily -- helped pave the way for a number of female performers in a pre-Lilith Fair market. She continued releasing albums well into the 2000s, often examining specific genres or subjects, although Tigerlily remained her biggest-selling record.
