British experimental music and art duo celebrated for their immersive blend of performance, electronics and joyful strangeness.
If you'd like to be the first to know when new events are announced, you can follow Mermaid Chunky below.
Mermaid Chunky are an audio-visual duo formed by Freya Tate and Moina Moin, whose work lives at the intersection of wild performance, experimental electronics and theatrical imagination. They craft shows where improvisation, costume and community converge — a world of pumping trance rhythms, sax solos, sculptural visuals and a sense that anything might happen. Their aesthetic embraces the odd, the playful and the immersive, often bringing friends and dancers into their orbit to expand the experience beyond performer and audience.
Their debut full-length slif slaf slof (2024) stands as a bold manifesto: threads of folk, jazz, electro and experimental pop flit through it, held together by a theatrical heart. The lead single “Céilí” builds from interlocking whistles to dancefloor currents, while “Chaperone” dives into disco-tinged ambiguity. Their unpredictable live performances have caught the eye of major names — James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem signed them to DFA after encountering their music randomly, leading to them supporting LCD onstage in London. Mermaid Chunky invite you to abandon certainty, dance in the unknown and let their music, costumes and community blur the edges of expectation.
