Men Without Hats are the Canadian new wave pioneers best known for their timeless synth-pop anthem "The Safety Dance." Formed in Montreal in the late 1970s by frontman Ivan Doroschuk, the band quickly gained recognition for their infectious melodies, quirky lyrics, and unmistakable electronic sound.
Blending the energy of punk with the emerging synth-driven aesthetic of the '80s, Men Without Hats hit international fame with Rhythm of Youth (1982), featuring "The Safety Dance"—a rebellious, danceable track that became an MTV staple and remains a pop culture fixture. Their follow-up album, Folk of the 80's (Part III) (1984), further cemented their reputation, but it was Pop Goes the World (1987) that gave them another hit with the title track, a bright, theatrical synth-pop gem.
Over the years, Men Without Hats have remained a cult favourite, riding waves of nostalgia while continuing to create new music. Their 2022 album Again (Part 2) saw them revisit their signature sound with fresh energy. With Ivan Doroschuk still at the helm, the band continues to tour, proving that their synth-fuelled spirit and anthemic choruses are as irresistible as ever.
