The show we need in these dark times
There is an amazing depth of experience, humanity and life well-lived in Mavis Staples' voice and presence. She transmits passion and commitment, emotion without sentimentality; she can hold pain and joy together, groaning, laughing and flirting in the blink of an eye. She is a thrilling musician with a great band, who still enjoys and believes in what she does. I came away from the Union Chapel feeling comforted and renewed. Thank you, Mavis!
