John Kearns (born 10 April 1987) is a London-born comedian and actor whose style combines whimsical absurdity, heartfelt observations and a flair for theatricality. Raised in Tooting, he studied English and Drama at the University of East Anglia, where he began performing in student comedy nights alongside Pat Cahill and others. Before comedy became his full-time gig, John worked as a tour guide at the Houses of Parliament as well as stints at the Science Museum and Natural History Museum which he often references in his quirky storytelling.
His breakthrough came at the Edinburgh Fringe: in 2013 he won the Best Newcomer Award for Sight Gags for Perverts, followed in 2014 by the Foster’s Edinburgh Award for Best Show with Shtick making him the first comedian ever to win those two in successive years. Since then he’s built a strong TV/online presence (including Taskmaster, Guessable?, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown) and toured solo shows that mix the absurd, the poetic and the oddly touching. His recent work, The Varnishing Days, explores life as a new parent, memory, art and the strange poetry of mundane things yet always with that signature wig, false teeth and playful destabilisation of what comedy can be.
