Jamila Woods is a Chicago-based poet, singer, and songwriter known for her profound exploration of Black identity, womanhood, and her deep connection to her hometown. She was raised on Chicago's South Side in the Washington Park and Beverly Hills neighbourhoods. Her father is a physician, and her mother serves as a spiritual healer.
Woods pursued higher education at Brown University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies and Theatre & Performance Studies. She draws inspiration from literary figures such as Gwendolyn Brooks and Lucille Clifton, which is evident in the thematic depth of her work.
Her discography includes the critically acclaimed albums HEAVN (2016) and LEGACY! LEGACY! (2019), the latter featuring tracks named after influential figures like James Baldwin, Nikki Giovanni, and Sonia Sanchez. In 2023, she released Water Made Us, further establishing her as a significant voice in contemporary music and poetry.
Beyond her artistic endeavours, Woods has contributed to the arts community as an arts administrator, reflecting her commitment to nurturing and promoting cultural expression.
