Formed in Chichester in 2000, Hope of the States stood apart from the early-'00s indie crowd, bringing sweeping strings, walls of noise and real post-rock ambition to their songs. Their debut album, The Lost Riots (2004), won them a devoted following and plenty of critical praise, and they followed it with the leaner, harder-hitting Left (2006). That same year, the band bowed out with a set at Reading Festival and called it a day.
In 2024 they reunited to mark 20 years of The Lost Riots, returning with the epic 11-minute "Long Waits in A&E", their first new music in 18 years. It captured the scale and emotion of the old records without feeling stuck in the past, and demand for their comeback shows was so strong that extra dates were added. The singles "Footage/Steamtrain" and "Billboard Mountain" followed in 2025, alongside a UK tour that showed the band sounding bigger and more triumphant than ever. What started as an anniversary reunion has become a proper new chapter.
