The girl group has long been a pop culture institution, but often one shaped by men and industry expectations. Liverpool-based five-piece Girl Group are rewriting that story. Formed by Katya, Maria, Thea, Mia and Lil while studying at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, the band emerged from a shared frustration with the music industry’s boys’ club culture. Their response was to build a fully collaborative project where women lead every stage of the creative process, from songwriting and production to visuals and creative direction.
Their debut EP is a sharp, joyful exploration of modern womanhood, tackling everything from societal expectations and the male gaze to friendship, freedom and female solidarity. Blending influences from alternative pop, post-punk, jazz and electronic music, Girl Group’s sound is as diverse as its members. At its core, the project is rooted in collective creativity, celebrating femininity in all its messy, vulnerable and powerful forms while creating space for a wider community of women in music.
