Superb
Five Way Split play jazz in the hard-bop style of the late 50s and early sixties - and they do it superbly. In a dazzling performance at Leicester's International for Jazz House, a remarkable tightness of ensemble was the basis for a series of spectacular solo contributions. Trumpet, tenor sax and piano shone alternately, with a great rhythm section providing a solid, yet subtle, foundation.
Most of the pieces were originals, many from the new album, and they were introduced with a sardonic wit that matched the band's confident music-making. Perhaps this kind of jazz isn't trendy anymore, but when it's as good as this, it provides tremendous excitement. Don't miss this band if they're anywhere near you!
