EFG London Jazz Festival presents Herbie Hancock, Barbican Hall, London - 14th November 2017

So it was my first time visit to the Barbican and the first time I've seen Herbie, a long-time musical hero of mine, live.

While I didn't take much to the Barbican Building itself, the concrete structure felt too heavy and dimly lit for me, the concert hall was comfortable and the acoustics were very good.

But it really was about the musicianship on stage that made for such a great concert. Hearing new music, especially jazz, can be mentally wearing as you feel around and unknown groove and melody. But when someone like Herbie intersperses the show with humorous rapport with the audience and classics like Watermelon Man and Running to Me it makes for a rewarding time. But to then end the show with a stonking version of Chameleon, including audience sing-a-long, I just loved it, loved it, loved it!
