Deep Forest is a French electronic music project known for blending world music with ambient and electronic elements, creating a genre often referred to as ethno-electronica. Founded in 1992 by Eric Mouquet and Michel Sanchez, the duo gained international acclaim with their debut album, Deep Forest (1992), featuring the Grammy-nominated hit “Sweet Lullaby”—a track that fused traditional African and Pygmy vocal samples with lush electronic production. Their distinctive sound, which combines tribal influences, atmospheric synths, and rhythmic beats, has influenced countless artists in the ambient, downtempo, and world music scenes.
Following their breakthrough, Deep Forest released critically acclaimed albums such as Boheme (1995), which won a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album, and Comparsa (1997), which incorporated Latin American rhythms. Over the years, the project has continued to evolve, with Eric Mouquet carrying the name forward after Sanchez’s departure. Deep Forest remains a pioneering force in global fusion music, captivating audiences with their dreamlike soundscapes and innovative cross-cultural collaborations.
