Crowbar are a formidable American sludge-metal band formed in New Orleans in 1990, led by vocalist and guitarist Kirk Windstein—the group’s driving force through countless line-ups and decades of sonic devastation. Fusing slow, brooding doom with hardcore aggression, they became one of the architects of the sludge-metal sound, even if Windstein himself is reluctant to embrace the tag. Their early records include Obedience thru Suffering (1991) and the breakthrough self-titled album Crowbar (1993), produced by Phil Anselmo and featuring the MTV-supported singles “All I Had (I Gave)” and “Existence Is Punishment.” Later albums such as Odd Fellows Rest (1998), now in Decibel Magazine’s Hall of Fame, and Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form (2001) cemented their reputation for bone-crushing riffs and unflinching emotional weight.
Renowned for their pulverising live shows, Crowbar have long held a devoted UK following. Fans at venues from Electric Brixton to SWG3 in Glasgow roar back classics like “Planets Collide” and “Like Broken Glass” with near-religious fervour, proof that the band’s bleak heaviness continues to inspire catharsis and connection. More than thirty years in, Crowbar remain a touchstone of heavy music, carrying the intensity of their early days into every performance.
