About Chiedu Oraka

Chiedu Oraka aka “The Black Yorkshireman” is the sound of a new working-class Northern England. Cutting his own lane in UK black music Chiedu captivates his audience by telling the untold story of what it means growing up black on a Yorkshire council estate. With his broad Hull accent, Chiedu describes his music as “UK Rap based music commentating on street and party culture”.

All from his homemade studio, his sound is turning heads and receiving many spins from BBC Radio 1’s former tastemaker Toddla T, BBC Radio 1’s Jeremiah Asiamah, Kiss FM’s Ellie Prohan and BBC 1Xtra’s Sian Anderson. Grime tastemaker Sir Spyro invited Oraka onto his show for his Grime on Tour feature where he received Man of the Match from my rival spitters.

Chiedu’s popular freestyle ‘Helly Hansen 3’ was premiered on Radio 1 by Toddla T and added to the Grime shutdown playlist and previous single ‘Darcy’ has over 3M streams on Spotify alone. This was heavily supported by Austin Daboh former head of editorial and sat on Grime Shutdown for over 300 days. The Streets Mike Skinner is a big fan also, spinning it on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show with press features including The Guardian, The Daily Express, i-D, BBC Newsbeat, The Quietus, GRM Daily, Mixtape Madness, Grime Originals & RWD Mag.

Chiedu Oraka grew up on the roughest council estate in Hull, he was the only black kid in his area and with no brother or father had to fend for myself. He was targeted, ridiculed and embarrassed of his Nigerian heritage.

As he got older he got myself into constant trouble with the authorities and ended up in jail. His mum never gave up and forced him into university where he turned my life around and got a degree.

Today Chiedu is a man who holds his heritage and history with pride however, one thing is the same… he still sticks out like a sore thumb. He’s a rapper with a northern accent, he still lives in the same white area, he stands out and he loves it.

The name “The Black Yorkshire Man” represents the underdog, pride in being black, being different and inspiration. This is the reason Chiedu makes music.

He has created a black music scene in Hull from nothing. Through nurturing and developing producers and DJ’s such as Deezekid (producer of MBB and Darcy) and Joe the Third (residency on one of London’s biggest underground grime radio stations “Mode FM”) Chiedu has built his collective Lockdown and independent label “Room 73”.

He has brought names to the city such as Jammer, Manga St Hilare, Devilman and Tempa T. Giving support slots and creating opportunities for up and coming artists, DJ’s and local venues. Chiedu does this to give the local talent a platform, help develop newcomers and create a community for black music.
