About CAP'N JAZZ

Cap’n Jazz are a seminal emo and indie rock band from Chicago, known for their raw, energetic sound and deeply influential legacy. Formed in the early 1990s, the band—featuring brothers Tim Kinsella and Mike Kinsella, along with Victor Villarreal, Sam Zurick and Davey von Bohlen—crafted a chaotic yet heartfelt style that blended punk urgency with introspective lyricism. Though they only released one full-length album, Shmap’n Shmazz (1995), their impact on the emo and math rock scenes has been immense, laying the groundwork for bands like American Football, Joan of Arc and The Promise Ring, which members later formed.

Despite their short-lived initial run, Cap’n Jazz have reunited for select shows, bringing their unfiltered, high-energy performances to UK audiences at venues like Electric Ballroom in London and festivals such as ArcTanGent. Their legacy continues to resonate with fans old and new, proving that their influence on underground music remains as vital as ever.

The best gig I've ever seen

I've seen almost all of my favourite bands at this point, but seeing the last Cap'n Jazz show ever was like getting an early christmas gift. It was such an amazing experience to see guys way too old to play the music they wrote when they still were teenagers, to see them enjoying it that much and making everyone in the room happy. It felt so good and so special to see the band that influenced me the most and shaped my music tastes, to hear the songs I've been listening to for 10+ years. The best thing I've ever experienced live and I don't say it easily God bless their young hearts
