Black Uhuru are a legendary Jamaican reggae group, renowned for their pioneering role in the evolution of roots reggae and dub music. Formed in Kingston in 1972, the band gained international recognition in the late 1970s and 1980s with their signature blend of deep bass grooves, militant rhythms, and socially conscious lyrics. With a revolving lineup over the years, the group’s most iconic era featured Duckie Simpson, Michael Rose, and Puma Jones, alongside legendary producers Sly & Robbie, whose innovative production helped define their sound.
Their breakthrough album, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1981), and the Grammy-winning Anthem (1984) cemented their status as one of reggae’s most influential acts. Hits like “Shine Eye Gal,” “Sponji Reggae,” and “What is Life” showcased their ability to fuse traditional reggae with electronic and dub elements.
