Big Special is an electrifying two-man post-punk band from the Black Country.
Their early collaboration emerged from shared experiences in a region marked by industrial decline, high unemployment, and social disrepair; these landscapes and their effects on mental health feed heavily into their lyrical and musical identity. Sonically, Big Special combine elements of punk, blues, soul, spoken word, synth and post-punk. Their music is raw, energetic, emotive, and socially conscious, as well as being vulnerable.
Their debut album Postindustrial Hometown Blues was released in May 2024 via So Recordings. It garnered acclaim for its emotional candour, sonic ambition, and honest depiction of life in the industrial Midlands.
They stand out in the current UK scene for how they mesh genres (punk, soul, spoken word) with lived experience, and for their ability to channel the personal into broader social commentary.
