Arab Strap have just announced their plans to reform in an interview on BBC 6 Music. Singer Aidan Moffat and guitarist Malcom Moffatt have teased fans with indications that something might be happening when they posted “Hello Again
” on their website. Apart from a handful of acoustic shows, this will be the first time they have played together since their split in 2006.
Not only have they reformed to commemorate their anniversary they also have hinted at plans to release new material. They made their massive announcement on the Steve Lamacq Show:
"I think the day we went to the pub and split up, we made a joke about Arab Strap getting back together in 10 years' time to celebrate,
" says Middleton. "So that's basically what this is: a chance to enjoy the music we made once more.
"We wanted to celebrate it while we’re still relatively young and don’t look too embarrassing on the stage
" added Moffat.
Taking influence for their name from Belle & Sebastian indie hit The Boy With The Arab Strap, the pair first started work together in 1995 and soon became an essential part of the Glasgow scene despite coming from Falkirk. Their lofi sound and dark sense of humour saw them sign to Chemikal Underground and they released their debut album The Week Never Starts Round Here the following year.
Somewhat stark but all the more endearing for it, the band’s music was a soundtrack to the fading optimism as the nineties were drawing to a close. This resounded well with the listening audience and second album Philophobia rose to #37 in the UK Charts.
They released another three records; The Red Thread, Monday At The Hug & Pint and The Last Romance before calling it a day.
Arab Strap tickets will be available online through the Gigantic website at 09:00 on Friday 17th of June. Be sure to set a reminder to make sure you don’t miss out.
