Luke Sital-Singh will headline the Friday night at Wood! Chosen as one of the BBC’s “Sound of 2014” artists (6 Music's Lauren Laverne calls Luke Sital-Singh "unbelievably good"), his song Fail For You has been making waves on the other side of the Atlantic, too — and featured in an episode of hit medical drama Grey's Anatomy last year. Born in New Malden and the youngest of three brothers, Luke Sital-Singh was encouraged to embrace music from a young age. He cites his influences as Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen, but this takes nothing away from Luke's originality: The Guardian described him as "breathing life into a tired form." With a hefty trio of EPs already released, Luke’s much anticipated debut album is expected in late Spring. We have heard great things about his live performances and very much look forward to celebrating with him at Wood!
We are similarly delighted to welcome My Sad Captains, a fine London troupe named after a Thom Gunn poem. They have just released their 3rd album, Best of Times, on the excellent Bella Union label, with an almost underplayed guitar-pop sensibility reminiscent of many classic indie bands of the 80s.
Also joining our Spring/Summer collection are the sweet Welsh sounds of Valleyers, who feature at this year’s Green Man festival, quality songwriting from Oxford’s My Crooked Teeth, Tape Club recording artist Sephine Lo, a prolific wunderkind about whom it’s not surprising to hear whispers of “Kate Bush” and “Joni Mitchell”, Brighton harpist and singer Ellie Ford, and jazzy world grooves from Natureboy. As well as a whole range of exciting talks in the Kindling tent — more on that soon — you can expect a solo set of songs and stories by Stornoway’s Brian Briggs, open sessions from Catweazle Club and The Acoustic Ballroom, and a late-night “DJ Sett” from DJ BADGER! (yes, 2014 is Wood’s YEAR OF THE BADGER!)
In case you missed it: We’ve already announced Sweet Baboo, aka North Wales native Stephen Black, to headline the Saturday night - a single minded, idiosyncratic singer possessing an ear for sparkling melody and a gift for a deft lyrical turn. The Sunday will be closed in party seven style by Oxford’s favourite cider-fuelled New Orleans jazz exponents The Original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band. We have a wonderful and wild cast making up the rest of the bill: Alessi’s Ark, Jackie Oates, Oliver Wilde, O’Hooley & Tidow, Dancing Years, Nick Cope, Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou, The Dreaming Spires, Vikesh Kapoor, Rachael Dadd, Trent Miller, Jack Day, Co-Pilgrim, Edd Keene, Nick Jonah Davis, Jali Fily Cissokho, Paul McClure, Count Drachma, Knights of Mentis, Julia Meijer, Art Theefe, Jordan O’Shea, Macamu, and we welcome back Oxford Ukuleles!
Created to be one of Britain’s greenest events, WOOD is powered completely on renewable energy. Three times a Greener Festival winner at the UK Festival Awards, WOOD’s famous composting loos-with-a-view have even been nominated for Best Toilets - no portaloos here — and last year we won a Silver Award from Festival Kidz. The stage, made of hand-crafted oak, has a cheery thatch of flowers growing on its roof. Come and camp out with us in our wooded clearing in the Chiltern hills whilst red kites soar overhead.
Children aged 12 & under go free accompanied by an adult. Tickets are available from www.woodfestival.com and Truck Store, Oxford. Music starts at 6pm on the Friday, gates are at 3pm.
2014 is our YEAR OF THE BADGER, so indulge in some black and white stripes! We want to focus on a different wild animal from our fair isles each year and badgers, one of our most beautiful animals, are the perfect animals to kick off our project. We will be highlighting their plight at the festival as well as all things wonderful about badgers and their very important role in the countryside.
Coming soon, the full list of workshops, activities and talks, which run all day Saturday & Sunday, for adults and children alike.
