About W.I.T.C.H.

W.I.T.C.H. (short for We Intend To Cause Havoc) is a Zambian rock band formed in the early 1970s, widely considered to be one of the pioneers of the African rock and psychedelic music scenes. The group was originally led by singer and guitarist Jagari Chanda, and they gained prominence for their unique blend of traditional Zambian rhythms with rock, funk, and psychedelic influences, which was revolutionary for the time.

W.I.T.C.H.'s sound is marked by its infectious rhythms, hypnotic guitar riffs, and soulful vocals, often accompanied by lyrics addressing social and political themes. Their 1975 album Lazy Bones! is considered a classic in Zambian rock history, capturing their experimental approach to music while drawing inspiration from Western rock influences like Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix. The band gained a cult following during the 1970s but remained relatively unknown outside of Zambia until the 2000s when their music was rediscovered by collectors and music fans worldwide.

In recent years, W.I.T.C.H. has experienced a resurgence in popularity, particularly after their music was reissued by various international labels. The band’s legacy has had a lasting impact on the Zambian music scene and continues to inspire new generations of musicians, both in Africa and globally. W.I.T.C.H.’s fusion of African rhythms with rock music remains a testament to the creativity and innovation of African musicians during a time of political and social upheaval.
