Serious celebrates the burgeoning music scene of Ireland with an evening of new, exciting Irish artists including masked experimentalists Meltybrains?, Afro-soul singer Loah and Emmet Kirwan.

Meltybrains? have garnered a reputation for their unabashed creativity and immersive live shows with tours across the UK and Ireland, along with festival appearances such as SXSW and Electric Picnic. The chemistry between each of the five classically trained but serially experimental members and their style has been compared to artists such as Animal Collective and GOAT.

‘They literally blew my mind. They're such accomplished musicians. All I can say is see Meltybrains? when you can. They are incredible live.’ (BBC Northern Ireland)

‘The band’s luscious auto-tune sprinkled harmonies to float freely until reaching a definite contender for percussion break of the year’ (BoilerRoom)
‘Meltybrains? might be classical trained musicians, but their music is indefinable, their fans look like cult members, and their live shows are bewildering’ (Irish Times)

Loah, having previously collaborated with Hozier, Villagers, and Kila, captivates audiences with her voice and unique mix of soul, R&B, and West African folk, combined with an array of classical and jazz arrangements. She has been compared to the likes of Erykah Badu, Oumou Sangaré, and NAO and, having released her debut EP This Heart to critical acclaim last year, she has since toured the UK and Ireland extensively and made her US debut in New York and SXSW as well as her recent performance at Imagining Ireland at Barbican.
‘With a warm, rich vocal and musical influences drawn from across the globe each song reveals a new facet to her songwriting and performance prowess’ (Line Of Best Fit)
‘The Irish Sierra Leonean singer is a unique talent, a magnetising performer and any time you see her sing, there’s a palpable sense of a musician on the rise’ (Nialler9)
Her music has elements of soul, funk R&B and rock, and she’s also rightly proud of her roots (Forbes)
Her stirring songs reflect her diverse roots. Loah is a conduit between two cultures (Village Voice)

At the cutting edge of the Irish spoken word and theatre scenes is Emmet Kirwan. Having first come to public attention as writer and star of cult Irish television comedy series Sarah and Steve, Emmet gained notoriety for his play Dublin Old School – a portrayal of Dublin’s underground culture – which toured extensively around the UK and Ireland, including a run in London’s National Theatre and The Pleasance Courtyard at Edinburgh Fringe, and is currently being adapted into a feature film. His short film and poem Heartbreak gained over a million views online and was awarded an Irish Film and Television award for Best Short Film. His new radio drama Wild West will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 this month. Emmet will be performing a selection of works old and new to open the night at Rich Mix.
‘A great onrush of sometimes laugh-out-loud verbal virtuosity’ (Independent)
‘To call this show high-energy is to underrate it. A tour de force of performance’ (The Stage)
