Ruff Sqwad stand as grime pioneers, raising the bar in production, attitude, and independence.
Ruff Sqwad emerged from Bow, East London in 2001, formed by teenage friends drawn together through shared beats at youth clubs and pirate radio sessions. Inspired by local pioneers like Wiley and Dizzee Rascal, founding members—Prince Rapid, Dirty Danger, Slix, Tinchy Stryder, Shifty Rydos, Mad Max, DJ Begg, and DJ Scholar—began creating and performing together from the age of 13 or 14. Their debut came through raw DIY instrumentals recorded on cheap home PCs, and disseminated via white-label vinyl and pirate stations like Rinse FM, Heat FM, and Deja Vu FM.
Ruff Sqwad quickly became renowned for their futuristic, stripped-back production aesthetic. Tracks like "Functions on the Low," "Pied Piper," and "Misty Cold" are considered grime classics, highlighted not just for their rawness but their sonic innovation, with “Functions on the Low” being the instrumental sampled in grime legend Stormzy's breakout hit, "Shut Up".
Often described as underground legends, Ruff Sqwad’s influence spans grime's entirety. They were true DIY innovators, self-releasing over 20 singles without label backing, maintaining integrity while shaping grime’s soundscape for the ages
