The Waco-born trumpeter was discovered by Wynton Marsalies whilst a young man whilst studying in Dallas before moving on to Boston's Berklee College of Music. However, keen to hit the stage, he would often make the journey to New York to perform in the various jazz clubs of the cosmopolitan city, resulting in him transferring to the New School there.
His talent soon earned him a place in various bands before he would move up to lead himself, releasing a debut album Diamond In The Rough in 1990. His exceptional skill saw him earn a Grammy Award for his 1998 album Habana, picking up a second in 2002 for his live performance with Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker which was captured on the record Directions In Music: Live at Massey Hall.
