ENO Studio Live brings Benjamin Britten's hit operetta Paul Bunyan to the newly renovated Alexandra Palace Theatre!

Following its sell-out run at Wilton’s Music Hall in 2018, ENO will again perform Paul Bunyan, Britten’s retelling of the legend of the eponymous giant. As part of ENO's Studio Live series, we present the immense power of opera in intimate theatre environments while celebrating emerging and established UK talents.

Director Jamie Manton’s five-star production explores dreams, and the nature of civilisation and its impact on the ecology of the world we inhabit.

The production features designs by Camilla Clarke, a winner of the 2015 Linbury Prize for Stage Design, lighting by Marc Rosette, and choreography by Jasmine Ricketts. It will be conducted by ENO’s chorus master, James Henshaw.

ENO Harewood Artists Elgan Llŷr Thomas and Rowan Pierce reprise their roles as Johnny Inkslinger and Tiny respectively, alongside the ENO Chorus.

Olivier Award-winning actor Simon Russell Beale will again provide the offstage recorded voice of the titular giant.

Performed by arrangement with Faber Music Ltd, London

The story of The Alexandra Palace Theatre is truly unique. Opened in 1875, the Theatre was a place of spectacle and delight where audiences of up to 3,000 people were entertained by pantomime, opera, drama and ballet. A feat of Victorian engineering, the impressive stage machinery was designed so that performers could appear, fly into the air and disappear through the stage.

However, it struggled to compete with the might of the West End and the theatre went on to be used as a cinema, a chapel and the home of music hall stars before a spell as a BBC prop store and workshop. For 80 years it has been closed to the public, a hidden gem perched high above the city.
