The golden age of satire? Late-Georgian satirical prints

Within this spotlight exhibition in the King Charles II Bedroom, Newstead Abbey presents nine late Georgian prints from the British Museum’s collection. The prints cruelly mock King George III and his dissolute sons in the period 1790–1820. This time is often referred to as the ‘golden age of satire’ and the prints on display are by the most talented, prolific and vicious satirists from that time, including Gillray, Cruikshank, Rowlandson and Newton. Many of the prints featured in the British Museum’s major 2018 exhibition I Object: Ian Hislop’s search for dissent.

Dr Richard Gaunt:
Richard is a specialist in British political and electoral history between 1790 and 1850 with a particular interest in national figures on the political right (Wellington, Peel, Disraeli), and local aristocrats with a strong impact on their county (4th Duke of Newcastle). I am interested in political biography, diaries and memoirs and maintain research interests in political culture including caricature, cartoons and songs.
Between April 2015 and April Richard joined Nottingham City Museums from the University to Nottingham as the 'Curator of Rebellion' at Nottingham Castle, to support the Castle in its £24m Heritage Lottery Fund re-development, particularly in respect of the Robin Hood and Rebellion Galleries.
