Evan Placey's Mother of Him at London's Park Theatre

Mother of Him

Cast includes Tracy-Ann Oberman

‘You are what I have created. And this is what you’ve created. All that’s left for you is an empty void.’

December. Toronto. It’s cold.

Brenda, a single Jewish mother (Tracy-Ann Oberman, best known for EastEnders and the hit comedies Friday Night Dinner and Toast of London) tries to manage her professional life whilst ushering youngest son, Jason, off to school. His elder brother remains asleep upstairs. This could be a day like any other, if older brother Matthew wasn't under house arrest.

Pursued by the media and tormented by guilt, Brenda tries to to hold her family together as the world is set to tear them apart. Inspired by true events, Evan Placey’s powerful and provocative drama questions what it takes for for a mother to stop loving her son.

Tracy-Ann Oberman, whose stage work ranges from Shakespeare with the RSC to Pinter in the West End, plays Brenda Kapowitz in this Award-winning play by Evan Placey (2011 Samuel French Canadian Play Contest Winner, King’s Cross Award for New Writing, Tarragon Theatre’s RBC Under 30 National Playwriting Competition Winner).

Director Max Lindsay makes his Park Theatre debut following his acclaimed 2018 production of Angry at Southwark Playhouse. From the producer of Park Theatre hits The Life I Lead, Pressure and Madame Rubinstein.

Park Theatre is the brainchild of Artistic Director, Jez Bond, and Creative Director, Melli Bond, who – following a six year London-wide search for a building – discovered a vacant office block next to Finsbury Park station in 2010. Garnering support from the theatre community at large – including luminaries such as Ian McKellen and Alan Rickman, the press and, importantly, local residents – they set out to raise the necessary funds to convert the tired concrete building into a thriving new theatre and beacon for the community. At a cost of just £2.6 million, the building, designed by David Hughes Architects, opened in May 2013 to rave reviews from the critics.

Nearest Tube station is Finsbury Park (Station Place Exit). Exit left out of Station Place then left and under the bridge. Then second left onto Morris Place, Park Theatre is at the end.

Travel by train: Old Street, Moorgate. Nearest tube: Kings Cross
