About Joe Bataan

Joe Bataan is a legendary musician and key figure in the development of Latin soul, boogaloo and salsa, blending Afro-Cuban rhythms with R&B, jazz and funk to create a sound that defined an era. Born in Spanish Harlem, New York, to Filipino and African American parents, he grew up surrounded by the rich musical cultures of the city. In the 1960s and 70s, he became one of the leading voices of the Nuyorican music movement, pioneering a fusion of Latin and African American influences. His breakthrough albums, Gypsy Woman (1967) and Subway Joe (1968), delivered infectious grooves and socially conscious lyrics, while Afrofilipino (1975) introduced elements of disco and funk, with hits like “Rap-O Clap-O” marking his impact on early hip-hop.

A dynamic live performer, Joe Bataan has captivated UK audiences at venues such as London’s Jazz Café and the Barbican Centre, as well as major events like The London Latin Music Festival.
