Join us to celebrate Herbie Hancock’s 1978 jazz-fusion, soul-inspired, vocoder-heavy, funk triumph ‘Sunlight’ with rising London pianist Renato Paris and Yohan Kebede of Kokoroko.

Released in June 1978 and instantly put the famed jazz keyboardist into the pop and soul sphere. Chops aside, this is an album with a heavy impact on the crossover appeal of jazz and one of it’s foremost proponents in the mainstream sphere.

Sunlight features I Thought It Was You, Hancock’s first top 20 UK hit. Reason enough for many fans to purchase the album multiple times over and a song that further solidified his star status in Europe.

“Sunlight is so feel-good in its bubble of disco-funk that you just get buoyed up by the (only technically plaintive) I Thought It Was You, along with tracks like Come Running to Me, Sunlight itself and No Means Yes. Track five, Good Question, veers away from the mellifluous disco vibe to deliver a barnstorming electric piano work-out. It’s as though Herbie had been joined by Weather Report, such is the power of the track which pummels along with particular punch and energy.”
