Henge were excellent
Unfortunately the sound quality in the balcony was not very good for the Gong set - too much distortion, so it was difficult to appreciate the music. Sadly, this new incarnation of Gong just does not have the joy and musical magic of the original Gong. From the number of bald heads in the audience (including mine), they seem to be holding on to the 'old' Gong audience, but really it would be better for them to change their name again, and attract their own audience as they progress in their own way.
Henge, though, were excellent. Their crisp guitar/drum power chords and skilful keyboard playing worked much better in the smallish venue - and they actually sounded much better live than they do on their CDs and in their YouTube videos. All of their numbers were powerful, accessible, rhythmic and very enjoyable. And the spokesperson for these aliens, Zpor (human pseudonym Matthew Whitaker), was charismatic and warm, with an entertaining story and a well-meaning message ("no to climate change, no to war, yes to space colonisation!"). The audience were in raptures of delight by the end!
