He’s won the Academy Honorary Award, been nominated for five Oscars, and has a slew of Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Grammys sitting on his mantelpiece. And at 86 years old he’s still going strong. A chance to see a true musical legend doesn’t come around very often, especially one 60 years in the making. Born in Rome, Italy, the classically trained Morricone moved into film during the 1950s and never looked back. However it wasn’t until the '60s - when he began composing scores for his former schoolmate turned director Sergio Leone - that he gained the attention of the masses. Leone’s 1964 spaghetti western A Fistful of Dollars, was the perfect platform for Morricone’s mastery of sound.

The pair would go on to define the genre, teaming up on several masterpieces including A Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly " both starring Clint Eastwood " and Once Upon a Time in the West, with Morricone’s score selling in excess of 10 million copies worldwide to date.

Morricone has continued his relationship with Hollywood, scoring Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill and Django Unchained, and Brian de Palma’s The Untouchables and Casualties of War. Tarantino’s upcoming movie The Hateful Eight, due for release in early 2016, sees Morricone back on familiar ground " scoring a western. But it’s live on stage where Morricone is perhaps best appreciated, conducting a large orchestra as they bring to life music that despite being incredibly familiar to us has never lost any of its ability to stir emotion.
