About C.W. Stoneking

C.W. Stoneking is an Australian blues player of note. A master of banjo, acoustic and electric guitar who started by playing the songs of the greats and has gone on to achieve even more by writing songs of his own. His gritty voice and toe tapping tunes see him set for even greater success.

Christopher William Stoneking was born in 1974 and grew up in the remote Australian Northern Territory of Katherine. His attraction to the blues came from an early age having first fell in love with the style at the age of eleven. The music of yesteryear, with its history, pain and pathos, spoke to him more than the soulless pop that surrounded him in the Eighties. “When I first heard it I thought it was kinda funny music”, he recalls “because it was so deconstructed and not really adhering to any rules that I’d been told music [should] fit into. And the more I listened to it, I just liked it more and more.”

After moving to Melbourne in 1997 he set about making his name releasing two confident albums of excellent covers titled C.W. Stoneking and C.W. Stoneking & The Blue Tits (Live).

2005 saw the release of his album King Hokum. The album was comprised of his totally original work and met with great critical acclaim winning Album Of The Year on Radio National’s Breakfast Programme, Best Independent Blues Release in the AIR Awards and nominated for the Best Blues/Roots Album in the ARIA Music Awards. Spurred on from this success, Stoneking formed his backing band; Primitive Horn Orchestra.

The following album, Jungle Blues, was also comprised of Stoneking’s original work and hit Number 45 in the ARIA Albums Chart. Similarly well received, the album received great many nominations at various awards and was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize.

Gon’ Boogaloo is his latest studio album released on his own King Hokum Records label and it see him reconnecting with the electric guitar. Drawing from a wide range of influences including gospel, 50’s R&B and early rock n’ roll the album is wildly exciting.
