The Real People emerged from Liverpool in 1986, led by brothers Chris and Tony Griffiths alongside a changing line-up that settled into Martin Lappin (guitar) and Tony McGuigan (drums). With a sound rooted in 1960s Merseybeat and the then-emerging “baggy” movement, they blended jangly guitars, strong melodies and energetic rhythms into early prototypes of the Britpop style.
Their self-titled major-label debut album The Real People (1991) reached No. 59 in the UK and featured singles such as “Window Pane” and “The Truth”. Beyond their own work, the Griffiths brothers made a lasting impact behind the scenes — helping Oasis record their first demo and contributing to their writing and production, a legacy frequently acknowledged by the Gallagher brothers. Re-united in 2008 and active since, The Real People continue to perform and record, standing as a quietly influential force in the UK indie/rock landscape.
