Great Lake Swimmers are a folk-rock band from Wainfleet, Ontario, led by singer-songwriter Tony Dekker and celebrated for their atmospheric sound, poetic lyricism and gentle, reflective storytelling. Since forming in the early 2000s, they have become a quietly influential force in Canadian indie folk, weaving warm acoustic textures with a sense of space and nature. Albums such as Ongiara (2007) and Lost Channels (2009) earned widespread acclaim, the latter shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize and featuring beloved tracks like “Pulling on a Line”. Their song “Your Rocky Spine” remains one of their most enduring and recognisable pieces, capturing the band’s signature blend of intimacy and grandeur.
Live, Great Lake Swimmers create an immersive, meditative atmosphere, with Dekker’s soft, evocative vocals sitting at the heart of their performances. Over the years, they’ve toured extensively, sharing stages with artists such as Feist and Calexico and appearing at major festivals including the Newport Folk Festival and Austin City Limits. Their most recent album The Waves, The Wake (2018) explored new sonic territory with rich arrangements and elegant, spacious production, marking another step in the band’s continual evolution. With their soothing yet emotionally resonant sound, Great Lake Swimmers remain one of Canada’s most cherished and quietly powerful folk-rock acts.
